About Fishers Island, NY
The General Court of Massachusetts granted Fishers Island to John Winthrop, Jr. on October 7, 1640. Winthrop only lived on the island for one winter and, after being named Governor of Connecticut, he used the island to raise horses and goats. The island stayed within the Winthrop family for over 200 years until it was purchased by Robert R. Fox in 1863.  It has been part of Southold Town since 1879 when a joint commission from Connecticut and New York decided the latter had legal title.
