About Laurel, NY
What is now Laurel was originally known as the "Middle Ground", falling between Southold and Riverhead. As more people moved into the district to farm, the area was renamed Franklinville after Benjamin Franklin. After some time, it was discovered that there was another Franklinville in New York and only one could have a post office so the residents changed the name to Laurel. Laurel boasts several old and attractive homes such as the Israel Fanning house built in 1836, Hedgewood Farms, and the McCarthy-Kuester house built around 1800 - all of which are private residents.
